A $200,000,000 racing complex located east of Denver Colorado on a 1,100 acre site is set for ground breaking late next spring with racing events scheduled beginning in 2013.
Plans call for a one mile banked oval, a road course, a drag racing facility, indoor and outdoor karting tracks and a concert pavilion. Seating capacity will be 90,000.
Developer Bill Schuck claims it will be the largest sports facility ever built in Colorado. He was quoted last May saying, "This economy is very, very difficult. Fortunately, we're working on a concept that's very unique. This is not just another real estate deal. We have spoken with NASCAR team owners. We have spoken with drivers. We have spoken with numerous investors, all of whom have expressed an interest in becoming part of this facility. Colorado needs a motor sports facility."
I’ve got to say this is a very positive development. It reinforces the stability of NASCAR and the other forms of racing when people are willing to invest so heavily in it.
Just like in other sports, I wonder how the mile high atmosphere will effect NASCAR's racing engines. Will the thin air change aerodynamics? I guess if everything works out we'll soon see!

Dwindy, good read. Pretty soon, you'll be able to add Colorado to the tracks JJ hasn't won at, LOL. That future development looks pretty sweet, and will be a boon to the local economy. I can easily see the NHRA adding this to its list of tracks, perhaps replacing New Jersey's antiquated strip.

ReplyDeleteI have to wonder... I know they've been staging auto races at venues in the high, thin air but what will be the effects on NASCAR vehicles? I found a recent article about drag racing at a Denver track. The altitude robs horsepower. Here's what Jason Line (NHRA racer and engine developer) had to say in an interview: “Our Summit Racing Pontiac will require a ton of changes to run fast in Denver, which is a lot of work for just one race,” said Line. “To really maximize our performance on the mountain, we’d have to do a lot of R&D and develop components for racing in the altitude, but given this is the only time all year we race in this environment, it’s just not feasible." ReplyDeleteThe altitude would definitely play havoc on the HP. I am always amazed at how much Darin, #2's engine tuner, watches the weather - he could have a degree in meteorology!
More tracks out west would be a good thing!

ReplyDeleteI was surprised to find this about a track in Colorado too. It sounds like everything's in order to start building, but who knows? Ever fly through Denver? You see all that prairie land to the east of the city? That's where this place is supposed to be built... Not much else out that way. A R.E. developer is the lead man, I'm sure he'd love to rake havoc on the prairie to stir up further investment... Great world we live in. (no, I'm not a tree hugger, I just think cities need to rejuvenate themselves rather than overtake the countryside)
Do you notice that guy running from the wreck find another gear as the car got real close? LOL
I, too, will believe it when I see cars going around and around on it. There's a long list of tracks. all over the country, that were "on the drawing board" and never got built.

Gene, I looked it up. The other date was sent to Texas. What I found stated that the attendance was off. That and that the past owners didn't keep up with other track owners in upgrading their facilities. I guess the track surface isn't in the best of shape either. That's the official line. It seems obvious, considering the last NASCAR races were during expansion, this track was sacrificed, just like a few other southern tracks, to expand the sport around the country...
