Grist for the NASCAR Rumor Mill

The talk started a few weeks back. Now with the announcement that Red Bull is planning to pull out of NASCAR at the end of the 2011 season, the speculation has kicked into high gear concerning who is going where prior to 2012.

First off, if it’s true about Red Bull, Brian Vickers will be looking for a new ride. Based on the fact that Red Bull bought out Ginn Racing a couple of years back, talk is now swirling that a new investor may step forward and take over the operation. Who might do such a thing has led to rumors that Mark Martin could be interested in leading a group to buy the team but as recently as yesterday Martin squelched that rumor stating in an interview on WindTunnel that he has no interest in owning a team. Then there’s talk that Red Bull’s general manager Jay Frye might try to line up an investor group to take over the organization. If something like that happens then Vickers may not have to leave. If a strong enough group steps forward and they remain a two car operation, then there will be a Sprint Cup ride available since Kasey Kahne is moving to Hendrick Motorsports next year. Here again there’s speculation that Martin would be a logical choice to move into this new team. Another rumor has Carl Edwards, who for some reason (more money?) hasn’t re-upped with Roush-Fenway, being the lead man in a buyout of Red Bull. This seems like a stretch to me, but who knows? Why hasn’t Carl followed right along with Greg Biffle and got a deal done with Jack Roush?

Speaking of Edwards, his lack of activity on a new contract has led to a lot of conjecture. One popular rumor that I can’t fathom has Joe Gibbs signing Cousin Carl and putting him in the Home Depot number 20 Toyota and either cutting Joey Logano loose or going to a four car Sprint Cup organization. This has been fueled by talk that Home Depot isn’t happy playing second fiddle to Lowes and their five time champion Jimmie Johnson. Now I have to admit Carl strikes me as being a do-it-yourself type of guy and would be much better suited to representing a company such as Home Depot while Joey is better suited to what, video games? All that talk about Joe Gibbs Racing makes me think Carl might have started the rumor to give himself leverage in negotiations with Roush. Now that strikes me as feasible. Roush has called Edwards a “Rock Star” so maybe Carl’s shooting for rock star wages (!) and Roush is sorry he ever said such a thing. Here again, who knows?

The gossip about Logano possibly being moved out of the Home Depot ride may cool now that he’s finally showing signs of living up to his “Sliced Bread” moniker with JGR. He’s still one of the youngest drivers on the circuit and I expect Gibbs to hang with the guy.
Based on his success, or lack thereof, across the 2011 Sprint Cup season while driving top quality Hendrick Motorsports equipment I have to think Mark Martin is done at the Cup level. Maybe he’ll get back into Nationwide and try to preserve his lead in career wins at that level.

Another top flight driver who has been rumored to possibly be on the move is Clint Boyer. There was talk not too long ago that Clint might be interested in taking over the number 4 Toyota with Red Bull, but that’s all gone away with the Associated Press release last week that Red Bull is done with NASCAR. Boyer strikes me as the type to be an organization’s lead driver and that’s not going to happen in the Childress organization as long as Kevin Harvick is there. So will Boyer move? He’s stated his prime concern is to stay put with Childress.

Then there’s Juan Pablo Montoya and Ryan Newman who both have their deals up for negotiation this year with Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing respectively. I’ve got to say that whether Juan wants to move on or not, I don’t know of much interest for the man anywhere other than with Chip Ganassi. If he stays in NASCAR he’ll be with EGR… As for Newman, I think he knows where he’s well off and that’s with Stewart-Haas.

With all these rumors being kicked around I have to say it looks like the best course for most of these guys is to stay put.

In another vein, there continues to be a question concerning Danica Patrick.
Will she finally stick to one racing series next year? I believe if she’s ever going to be a consistent top driver she’s got to make the move into just one series. Whether her detractors believe it or not, I think she’s shown marked improvement with the fender rubbers in NASCAR’s Nationwide Series and that her best option would be to move full-time to that series and then consider a ride at the Cup level. She has one heck of a following, she’s good for NASCAR and if she follows that course maybe we’ll see her in victory lane. It’s supposed to be about winning isn’t it?

I’m sure I’ve missed out on some of the rumors out there. What have you heard?

  1. The very persistent rumor that I've heard- denied by those involved , of course- is that Greg Zipadelli will leave JGR at the end of the season and reunite with Tony at SHR. Darian Grubb will stay with SHR as Director of Competition. Zippy still has one or two years on his contract at JGR and state adamantly that while he loves Tony like his brother, he is happy at JGR despite the lack of success with Joey. Still, I think there's a figure that, if offered, would convince Zippy to make the move.

  2. Now there's a good one. Considering the economy and even though it appears NASCAR is hanging in there, I have to wonder how much SHR would be willing to pay assuming a buy-out on Zipadelli's JGR contract is most likely going to be necessary.

I'm also going to assume the owners (Roush for one) are dragging their feet about considering upping the ante with their drivers in any contract negotiations. I know if I was in their shoes I'd be playing that angle for all its worth!

    We'll see!

    Thanks SB!

  3. Joey has to make the Chase this year for Home Depot to stick with him... if they don't get Edwards. They see Edwards as a driver that can go toe-to-toe with JJ and Lowes. Ford probably won't let Edwards get away.... so I'm expecting JGR/Home Depot to make a run at Clint Bowyer. Bowyer could be a rock star.

I've heard that Martin will bring godaddy (and maybe Danica) to Turner Motorsports. And they'll probably have a Cup car, or two. Would be no surprise for Hendrick to supply/support the team Mark goes to. Especially since JR Motorsports is likely to fold as a full time team after this season... unless big dollar sponsors materialize.

    JPM is resigning with Ganassi.

If any driver brings a full time sponsor to Tony, Ryan will be dumped.

  4. Great stuff oh guru of NASCAR (We all bow to you! LOL)

I thought you'd have some interesting tidbits to share. Clint Bowyer to JGR? Now that would be something. Wonder what Harvick would have to say about that? Then I wonder what happens to Joey?

Turner Motorsports is evidently on the move up but Martin is older than dirt (like me!). You really think he has that kind of appeal in 2012? Plus the GoDaddy sponsorship would follow along and leave HMS and JR Motorsports?

And here I thought Tony and Ryan were close friends...

    Thanks for the scoop Gene!

  5. I'm not sure Logano has come anywhere close to being "Sliced Bread." He still is 20th in the points standings and hasn't really contended for a win this year except last week at Daytona. He might eventually become great, but it's going to take a lot longer than people first thought.

  6. I haven't been tuned into the rumors for some reason this year. The only one I can contribute is about JJ with HMS. AS all know I am not a big fan of JJ but I like him.

I have a theory about JJ's sub par performance this year. He is sand bagging enough to stay in the chase points contention but when the championship races start,he again will dominate the chase.

I find it suspicious that Chad and JJ have been floundering so far this season. Considering the resources available to Chad and JJ, it is highly unlikely that this team has lost the competitive edge. So I have to inagine his performance to date is all a ploy to throw every one off.

  7. jmayer,

Logano has been doing slightly better the last couple of races and maybe that's a sign of things to come. I noticed he's also willing to push back on some of the more pushy drivers these days (not a bad thing)... Who knows, like Gene said up above, maybe he'll be out if he misses on the Chase this season.

    Thanks for the comment!

  8. Kinda like a snake in the grass photogr?

Maybe they'll get into this groove and forget about what it takes to overpower the field. It's almost like there was an all out effort last season to surpass Gordon's trophy total and now that it's accomplished they're content to roll with the flow... Seems to me he's only two titles shy of NASCAR's Mt. Rushmore duo of Earnhardt and Petty so why not keep the string going?

    Thanks a lot!

  9. I got nothing more than what has already been written...

I've heard the 20 crew lamenting that Joey is no Smoke often so they aren't so into the sliced bread.

Carl has been very open about wanting the coin - and Roush is notoriously cheap - so I am sure Carl is angling for more money to stay in the 99 or would jump to Gibbs who would pay rock star wages.

MM needs to retire - bub-bye sick of him!

Unfortunately Danica will likely come to Cup and alas I will have to stop watching!

  10. Hey Kristen!

How's the Lug Nuts Rock Star? Liked the shades in you pic with Kurt... Also see where you're getting kudos on the Fast and Fabulous! WTG girl!

Well, do you think Carl will move or not? Gene talks like Ford may step in and make things right for Carl if Roush won't do it so he'll remain a Ford driver.

I thought you were a BIG Danica fan! LOL!

    Thank alot Kristen!

  11. =) I should have droppped that Sharpie I was holding though. Doh! Valli and I are good buds...nice to get a little cross blog mention for sho!

I think Carl will play every card he has to move out on the table and then see what Roush and Ford counters with and I'd put his chances at leaving at about 5%...before Daytona I think Roush was planning on adding Ragan's salary to Carls and calling it good. LOL
