IndyCar: Interest shown in $5M gambit

Remember the $5,000,000 IndyCar is prepared to hand to any non-IndyCar driver who might win their season finale race in Las Vegas? Well, according to IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard, the offer has spawned a lot of inquiries from the other circuits' drivers. Without divulging any names, Bernard stated, "Some of the names are fantastic. I think people will be surprised on who wants to drive it."

Included in the overtures were drivers from NASCAR, Formula 1, Supercross and Rally.

"The bottom line is us trying to gain credibility, to say that our drivers are the best drivers in the world," Bernard said. "They're the fastest, most versatile drivers in the world. That's really what this is all about, is putting that out there to say, 'If you don't believe it, come take a look.' "

Last year’s IndyCar finale from Homestead was broadcast on Versus while this year’s Las Vegas finale will be on ABC with Bernard pointing out, "Our whole key to this is last year we did a .3 rating on our championship race. In my opinion, that's the best-kept secret in motorsports. If we can't do a 1.5 or 2 rating on network television, I would consider it a failure."

"Our drivers have not been able to create the credibility they need," he said. "It's not because they don't have the talent; it's because there's been no emotional attachment to our fan base. What we have to do is bring that back."

Bernie Not Going to Melbourne

The President and CEO of Formula One Management and Formula One Administration, Bernie Ecclestone won't be on hand for the Formula One season opener in Melbourne Australia this weekend so he can meet with New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to discuss plans to put in a Formula One race circuit on New York City's Staten Island. The move (snub) has added fuel to a growing fire that this season will be the last for the Australian Grand Prix. Only time will tell...

Robert Kubica To Have More Surgery

Since his accident in a rally on February 6th Robert Kubica has gone through three operations (seven hours to save his right hand, one on his shoulder and another on his leg) and now he will have a final procedure on his elbow. The good news is that he has feeling in his hand and can move the fingers. How long his recovery will take is only speculation at this time but I’d be willing to bet he’s anxious to get his Lotus Renault ride back from Nick Heidfeld.

The Quantas Airlines Australian Grand Prix Grid Girls...

Bernie, if you're not going to miss Australia I know a lot of guys that will!

14 comments:

  1. Excellent primer on who's who and what's what AND perfect timing for this week's Trifecta which will feature both races in addition to the NASCAR races from California.

Mind if i link to your blog when I post tomorrow's Trifecta? It might help some of those who don't follow open wheel racing make their decisions.

  2. Hi SB!

    Link away! LOL

I figure I need as much help as possible on these open wheel series so this is one way to do it...

    Thanks!

  3. Dwindy, are you going to the St Pete Grand Prix? I went in 2006 or 2007. It was fun. We stayed at the Hilton right along the long straightaway, and watched practice from our room.

Dan Wheldon was living in St Pete back then. He still may be.

  4. How's the song go Gene?

I owe, I owe, so off to work I go... It would be cool to go but duty calls... If I'm lucky things will be changing shortly for me and I'll not only have the time, but also the funds.

Not sure, other than because of his driving results, why Wheldon is out of IndyCar... I saw some speculation that he might show up driving for KBM in the truck series. Now that would be interesting...

    Thanks Gene!

  5. Whew! Now I know who to pick..the same guys I always do! LOL You didn't list them in order of cuteness Dwindy!

I heard the same rumor about Wheldon coming to truck too...hmmmmm

  6. Kristen, you can't fool me... You're gonna take Helio for sure in IndyCar... After that I've gotta figure you for... (Tall and handsome in F1...) Mark Webber???

If that's your criteria I'm sure you'll do better than any scientific way... LOL

I picture these open wheel drivers having a real learning curve and then fear factor to get over when it comes to fender rubbing... Maybe Wheldon would do all right, maybe not...

  7. Alonso is my dreamboat in F1 Dwindy...so there you guys go - my picks will almost always be Helio or his Penske teammates and Alonso! No surprises there!

Closing rate, bumper tag and the schedule are the main differences open wheelers will have to adjust to coming to nascar I think.

  8. for those wondering....Wade Cunningham is, quite possibly, the best driver to come out of Kiwi-land. Bold words given the likes of Denny Hulme, Bruce McLaren (yes, that McLaren...so, arguably, the British anthem is the wrong one to be playing in F1) and Scott Dixon.

he won the world karting champs in 2003 and the Indylights (or whatever it's called now) back in 2005 so he's handy around the ovals in an open-wheeler.

  9. tez...

You didn't take young Mr. Cunningham? No will power? LOL!

I looked up Cunningham, quite a career so far. Maybe great things are in store for him and sounds like his younger brother is coming along too.

    Thanks for the info.!

  10. Well since I haven't been following Open wheels much lately, I guess I will have to go with Danica Patrick and the grid gals. A cute face always gets me.

  11. Hey photogr!

You must like puppies and kittens too! LOL I know I do...

I'd certainly like to check out Melbourne Australia...

  12. Hey Dwindy!

Perhaps the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, TX will be taking the place of Australia. The Austin track will be finished sometime next year. (I never envisioned Austin as a hotbed of U.S. racing; I envisioned the city as a music and hot woman capital!)

And I like looking at those sweet-looking Grid Girls!

    ReplyDelete
  13. jon there's quite a line-up of tracks that'll be coming on-line in F1... I'm figuring it'll be a real long drive (20 hours) from Florida to get to Austin if I'm still living here... Now if I make the move to Arizona that I hope for it will be a little more reasonable... Like 15 hours... One way or another I want to see those F1 cars race up close.

The music and **other** attractions will be nice too!
