Prior to NASCAR announcing their changes to the Sprint Cup points scoring procedures last winter I made the case for a much greater reward for drivers and teams that actually win the races. The thought being that it would act to stimulate competition at the front of the pack and diminish the benefits of playing it safe and shooting for consistency.
Today, with two races left in the 2011 Chase my fears have been confirmed as the top driver has a grand total of 1 win on the season. This while the second place driver has 4 wins and on top of that, all 4 wins have come in the 8 Chase races so far this season. Now how on God’s green earth is the guy with 4 wins in the Chase not in the lead?
I guess the name of the game still excludes winning…
Not to worry- the Beagle Voodoo is working hard to ensure that the guy with the most wins gets the BIG trophy at Homestead.
ReplyDeleteHow has Tony done at Phoenix in the past? I know the track will be different and we don't have much to go on... He'd better keep the pressure on with another 1.5 mile cookie cutter track right over the horizon that Carl won on last year.
ReplyDeleteI'd REALLY like to change the points system. Give the driver that wins 10 points on top of the 43 he/she gets for winning... Then the next 4 drivers get 4, 3, 2 and 1 additional point(s) for second through fifth place. Keep everything else the same. 3 additional points for a win just doesn't get it...
You mean that VooDoo Doll is still intact?
Thanks SB!
Phoenix is one of Tony's favorite tracks. He's won there in both IndyCar and NASCAR so he knows its little idiosyncrasies pretty well. I'm sure some of those idiosyncrasies have changed with the repave, but during his post race press conference Sunday he said that the car was fast and very responsive to the track changes. He's looking forward to a fun weekend.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Voodoo Duck, Katie rips the stuffing out of it, and we restuff it so it's good to go for the next race (she HATES it when we restuff her toys and chews on them even harder); however, this one will probably be retired at the end of the season
nascar must be listening to a vocal group of fans who favor consistency. These would be the same fans of driver(s) that never or hardly ever win.
ReplyDeleteRacing is supposed to be about winning. nascar is the only pro sport with so little emphasis on winning.
Sounds like Tony should be in good shape... You know we're talking about his ticket into the Hall of Fame don't ya? 3 Cup Championships and Tony will be a shoo-in!
ReplyDeleteGene...
ReplyDeleteI think we've had this conversation before. Not playing to win is absolutely foreign to me and I know there are some who would tell me I can't see the forest for the trees, but playing to win means every single time you play. Everytime the ball is snapped, every time you step into the batters' box, every time you break the rack, every time you line up your drive AND every time you strap yourself into a race car, you there to win!
I'm sure a lot of people call the 2011 NASCAR season a success based on the single fact that Dale Earnhardt Jr. made the Chase... And he did it without a single win in 26 races and that's been the case for how many races/seasons total?
Thanks Gene!
Excellent this post
ReplyDeletePink Lotus
Good point...but I think Carl has to win to beat him right?
