News From Around NASCAR

Stewart-Hass Racing announces Mobil 1 will sponsor Tony Stewart’s number 14 Chevrolet next season replacing Old Spice. Mobil 1 will be the primary sponsor for 14 races while Office Depot will take over on the remaining 22… Mobil 1 had to move out of Penske Racing when Roger struck a new deal with Shell-Pennzoil.

Looks like we're going to have to get used to seeing Tony in another color scheme...

Word is that Volkswagen is considering joining NASCAR in the not too distant future. The German automaker is introducing a new midsize sedan to the American auto market and according to Matthias Müller, CEO of Porsche, Volkswagen Group it is a logical move. So who might be interested in jumping on board with VW? Rumors are swirling that Roger Penske might be open to such a deal but according to Speed.com it won’t happen until Penske’s deal with Dodge runs out after 2011. Can you see Kurt and Brad in a VDub??? Is Kurt going to switch to number 53? Brad?
I think they'll be driving something like the one on the right... Ahhhh, German engineering...

After all the talk a month or so back about possibly shutting down his truck racing team at the end of this season Kyle Busch has moved ahead and will open a brand new headquarters this Thursday in Mooresville North Carolina. The 77,000-square foot Kyle Busch Motorsports facility will be the scene of an open house and fan appreciation day. Although no announcements have been made concerning new sponsors for the 2011 season, it would appear it’s pedal to the metal to me!

And here I thought it was going to be a big red barn!

With the understanding that I’m a relative novice when it comes to all things NASCAR, nonetheless I would like to see the following five make it into the Hall:

1. Raymond Parks

2. David Pearson

3. Dale Inman

4. Glen Wood

5. Cale Yarborough

Two drivers, two owners and a crew chief, all had a genuine impact on NASCAR through the formative years up to present day…

Who would you like to see?

Well guys... I got one right! Shows you what I know...

David Pearson, Bud Moore, Lee Petty, Ned Jarrett and Bobby Allison make up the second class of inductees into NASCAR's Hall of Fame. Four drivers and one owner.

Congratulations to you one and all!

  1. Kind of seems like Mobil is following Newman around. I think they were pretty happy with him back at Penske. Not so happy with Sam Hornish. I'm just thinking that Ryan may have helped Tony secure their sponsorship. Just speculation.

    Ok, my picks for the HOF;

    1.Bobby Allison
    2.Cale Yarborough
    3.Fireball Roberts
    4.David Pearson
    5.Benny Parsons

All drivers. The way it should be, this time.

  2. CR I understand the drivers only, but... As I understand it, Raymond Parks is the guy that pushed Bill France in the early days. NASCAR wouldn't be what it is without him and he probably deserved to be in the initial group of inductees but the France's couldn't handle that...

I guess Richard Petty's crew chief doesn't cut it?

How about one of the early innovators in the sport that ended up a Ford-NASCAR icon as an owner.

You want drivers? How about this list of those that drove for Glen and Leonard Wood... Glen Wood - Banjo Matthews - Bob Welborn - Junior Johnson - Fred Harb - Fred Lorenzen - Earl Balmer - Bobby Rahal - Jim Massey - Dave MacDonald - Tommy Ellis - Speedy Thompson - Parnelli Jones - Curtis Turner - Tiny Lund - Dan Gurney - Donnie Allison - Marvin Panch - A. J. Foyt - Buddy Baker - Cale Yarborough - Dale Jarrett - Neil Bonnett - David Pearson - Kyle Petty - Morgan Shepherd - Michael Waltrip - Elliott Sadler - Ricky Rudd - Ken Schrader - Jon Wood - Boris Said - Marcos Ambrose - David Gilliland & Bill Elliott!

  3. My five.....

David Pearson. The original G.O.A.T. He should have went in last year!

The next three are 3,4,5 in total wins...

    Cale Yarborough

    Bobby Allison

And as much as it pains me to say it, Darrell Waltrip. He was JJ and Kyle combined back in the 70s and 80s when TV was coming into NASCAR. He was media friendly before NASCAR knew what media was.

There are at least 10 men who are worthy of being the 5th pick this year, but I'll go with...Lee Petty in a photo finish over Ned Jarrett.

  4. Dwindy, you make a compelling case for Glen Wood. I see the light! I'll change my vote; dropping Parsons for Mr. Wood. (like what we say makes a difference!) I also was hesitating over Darrell Waltrip, but didn't have the balls Gene has, to put his name down in infamy! LOL

  5. Here are my five:

David Pearson (the only other driver with triple-digit wins in Cup; JJ will join him in 2014, lol--j/k about the year, but he WILL join him in the Triple Digit Club at some point late in his career)

    Cale Yarborough

    Bobby Allison

    Raymond Parks

    Lee Inman

Three drivers, a car owner, and a crew chief.

Great job on the article, Dwindy!

  6. Gene you're a good man! I thought about Darrell over Dale Inman but as great as King Richard's achievements are, I know there's a lot more than simply a driver making the strokes... Inman was there for every lap Petty ran in the championship years.

You hear anything about Kyle getting sponsors for his trucks?

  7. CR you're a good man too! LOL No huevos but a good man!

  8. jon... You're a good San Joaquin Valley man! I like your picks. It won't be long before we'll know who makes it.

BTW What's happening to FSU? Hawaii beat em pretty bad... Injuries?

    Thanks jon!

  9. The Rainbows beat the Bulldogs?

Anyone remember the Jon Stewart song, with the lyric, "I have not been known as the Saint of San Joaquin"? 10 bonus points if you name the song. Tip; Smoke usually hot in this month.

  11. Check out the picture of Richard Petty and Junior Johnson after receiving letters form President Barack Obama during NASCAR Hall of Fame Voting Day in Charlotte. Junior looks like "what in Sam Hill do I need this for?" LOL

  12. Hey tez!

Maybe Porsche will be involved... Never thought I'd see Toyota in NASCAR... Now VW? Who's next? Ya know, there are enough manufacturers out there to have each NASCAR team in a different make... How about Stewart-Hass in with Subaru? Or Richard Petty with Peugeot? LOL

    Thanks tez!

  13. I checked it out CR... You know Junior Johnson was a big Obama supporter back in '08... Maybe he's changed his mind???
